River Forest, IL - The Dominican University Stars swept the Marian University Sabres on Saturday, taking the first game of the doubleheader 10-5 and then topping the Sabres 9-3 in game two. The wins improved the Stars' Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) record to 5-7 while dropping the Sabres to 8-4 and out of a three-way tie for first place in the NAC. The Stars scratched across their first run of the game in the bottom of the second without hitting the ball out of the infield. Dominic Tardi (Downers Grove, IL) led of the inning with a walk followed by a Chris Anderson (Plainfield, IL) walk. After a bunt single by Michael Albert (Chicago, IL), Tardi scored as Joe LasCola (Chicago, IL) grounded into a double play. After scoring a run apiece in the third and fourth inning, the Stars notched two runs in the bottom of the fifth after Colby Batchelor (Northridge, CA) started a two-out rally with a walk. Kevin Cahill (Chicago, IL) then singled and both would score on a single by Tardi. The Sabres got three runs back in the top of the sixth but Dominican responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Derek Stone (Northridge, CA) started off the inning with a bunt single and then stole second. After a bunt single by Batchelor, Cahill drove in both runners and would later score on a single by Albert. Junior Anthony Davey (Wellington, OH) improved to 4-0 on the season as he picked up the win on the mound for the Stars. Davey went five-plus innings, allowing three runs on eight hits four walks while striking out four. In game two, Batchelor picked up three more hits and drove in three runs and scored three more as the senior improved his batting average to .375 with 23 RBI. On the mound, sophomore Matthew Dehn (McHenry, IL) picked up his third win of the season, improving to 3-3, as he scattered eight hits and three walks over 8.1 innings of work. The Stars now stand at 12-16 on the season and return to action on Sunday as they travel to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors.
