River Forest, Ill. - The Dominican University men's soccer team advanced to Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Men's Soccer Tournament championship match for the fourth consecutive season with a 3-0 win over the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Wednesday afternoon. Dominican took a 2-0 lead just 16 minutes in after sophomore Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill.) and junior Michael Kapusta (Bartlett, Ill.) tallied unassisted goals just over ninety seconds apart. Lagunas's goal came as he beat the Falcons' goalkeeper to a fifty-fifty ball before dribbling around the goalie and tapping in what proved to be the game-winning goal. Kapusta then gathered a rebound of a blocked shot by Dominican's Lio Tovar (Cicero, Ill.) and then fired a shot from 16-yards out that found the back of the net. Thirteen minutes later, Tovar added an insurance goal of his own as Dominican dominated the opening half, outscoring the Falcons 3-0 while outshooting their conference foe 12-2 in the opening 45 minutes. After pressuring the Falcons for the first 45 minutes, the game evened out over the final 45 minutes with the Falcons forcing Dominican's Maxwell Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.) to make four second-half saves to preserve the shutout victory for the Stars. The win was the eighth in as many games for Dominican. In fact, the Stars are unbeaten in their last 13 contests dating back to September 16. The Stars will now host the MSOE Raiders in the NAC Championship match on Saturday afternoon. The Stars topped the Raiders 3-1 in the pair's regular season meeting on October 24th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Dominican's West Campus Field. |
