River Forest, Ill. - The Dominican University men's soccer team advanced to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships with a 2-1 double overtime victory over the Elmhurst College Bluejays on Saturday afternoon at Dominican's West Campus Field. Freshman Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill.) tallied the game-winner for the Stars, 57 seconds into the second overtime period. Roberts capitalized on an Elmhurst turnover inside the Bluejays' box, scoring his seventh goal of the season. The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute of play as sophomore Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill.) ran on the end of a cross from freshman Andy Lynch (Hawthorne Woods, Ill.) for his second goal against Elmhurst this season. The Bluejays evened the score at 1-1 in the 88th minute as freshman Ken Miller's long throw was knocked around in the Dominican goalbox before finally landing at the foot of junior Jon Brehm who beat Dominican's Ben Gomez to send the game into overtime. The Stars doubled up the Bluejays in shots, 18-9, and put nine shots on goal compared to just two for Elmhurst. The Stars also held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon. The win improves the Stars to 16-1-3 on the 2009 campaign and puts them into the second round of the NCAA national tournament for the third year in a row. On Sunday, the Stars will entertain the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks who topped St. Olaf 1-0 on an own goal in double overtime.
