(708) 524-6554 Tim Walenga became the third head coach of the Dominican University women's volleyball program in as many years as he took over the Stars' program for the 2006 season. Walenga boasts over ten years of college coaching experience, including a stop at Marshall University where he served as the interim head coach in the spring of 2002. Walenga comes to Dominican after spending two years as the First Assistant Volleyball Coach at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. His college coaching experience also includes stints at Elon University, Minnesota State University and South Suburban College in South Holland, IL. Walenga has experienced success at the collegiate level in rebuilding programs. In two years as an assistant and the interim head coach at Marshall University, Walenga helped build the Thundering Herd from a 6-win season to a 21-win season in 2002. At Elon University, Walenga helped the Phoenix to 15 wins in 2003, after winning a total of 15 matches in the previous two seasons combined. Walenga is also an accomplished coach at the club and Junior Olympic levels. He co-founded and was the assistant director of the Mankato Juniors Elite Volleyball Club and served as the head coach for the 14- and 16-year old teams. Walenga has coached both boys and girls teams for Second City Volleyball Club, Chicago Juniors Volleyball Club, Triangle Volleyball Club and 1st Alliance Volleyball Club. In 1997, 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2007 his teams qualified for the Junior National Championships. A 1995 graduate of Illinois State University, Walenga competed with the Illinois State University men's club volleyball team from 1991-1995. In 2000, he received a master's degree from Minnesota State University in physical education, with an emphasis in athletic administration, where he again competed as a member of the university's men's club volleyball team and served as the club's president. Walenga has continued to play competitively, playing with a Chicago-based USA Volleyball club team that has finished in the top five in the nation in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Most recently, his club team won a National Championship at the 2005 USA Volleyball Adult Championships in the Men's "A" Gold Division. In addition to his responsibilities of coaching the women's volleyball program at Dominican University, Walenga will also serve as the Coordinator of Intramurals and Club Sports. |
