Mary Welk, a 2004 graduate of Dominican University, joins the women's volleyball program at Dominican as an assistant coach for the 2008 season. Welk, a four-year letter winner with the Stars from 2000-2003, is currently the program's all-time leader in kills, attack percentage, service aces, digs and matches played. Throughout her time at Dominican she racked up 2,131 career kills on a .304 attacking percentage to go along with 2,653 career digs. A two-time Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) Player of the Year selection, Welk was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region Team following her senior season and received honorable mention for the AVCA's All-America Team. In 2003, she led the Stars to a program-best 26 victories as the Stars advanced all the way to the NIIC Tournament Championship game for the second time in as many seasons. During that season Welk established single-season Dominican University records with 777 kills and 951 digs. In addition to her career and single-season records, Welk also holds a number of single-game records for the Stars including kills in a match. Four times throughout her illustrious career Welk reached 33 kills in a match, all coming during her senior season. In addition to her playing experience, Welk has piled up coaching experience since graduating from the university. In 2004, Welk served one season as an assistant coach with the Stars. That year, the Stars posted their third straight 20-win season with a 20-17 overall record and won the NIIC regular season championship with a perfect 6-0 mark in conference play. At the high school level, Welk has coached at Glenbard North High School and Loyola Academy as well as coaching with Adversity Volleyball Club out of Evanston. |
